Interview de Marc Birebent par Rolf Bichsel.

Le discours de Marc Birebent est sans équivoque : "Notre vignoble est malade. Constitué de vignes "jetables" à la durée de vie limitée, il nécessite des soins intenses. Au bout de 20-25 ans seulement, nos plants de vigne dépéris sont voués à l’arrachage. " En cause bien entendu tout un ensemble de facteurs qui provoquent et accélèrent leur dépérissement. Mais pourquoi limiter la réflexion aux lésions tardives des ceps et ne pas étudier la première blessure des plants de vignes contemporains : celle occasionnée par le greffage du Vitis vinifera sur le porte-greffe "américain" ? Tous les plants greffés mécaniquement présentent des nécroses internes irrémédiables. Le jeune plant greffé-soudé « prêt à planter », est déjà à moitié mort lorsqu’il débute son existence au champ. Lors de son développement ultérieur, la proportion centrale de bois nécrosé demeure au minimum identique, mais elle est souvent aggravée par les blessures mécaniques successives (taille, décavaillonnage, …).
Marc Birebent propose une alternative simple et approuvée : le retour au greffage manuel et qualitatif directement au champ, qu'il pratique, à travers sa société worldwide vineyards, dans le monde entier depuis plus de trente ans. 
Rolf Bichsel lui a consacré une vidéo passionnante qui résume certes le problème, mais montre également des solutions.    
Marc Birebent est issu d’une longue lignée de vignerons. En 1997, il prend la direction de la société worldwide vineyards, spécialisée dans le greffage la vigne en prestation de services. Depuis, il ne cesse de promouvoir dans le monde entier, avec ses travaux pratiques et lors de stages de formation, les techniques de greffage respectueuses du végétal, qui elles seules permettent d’établir des vignobles durables et de qualité. Il a clairement démontré que les problèmes d’apoplexie et de dépérissement de la vigne deviennent anecdotiques si les techniques de greffage appropriées sont adoptées.
Rolf Bichsel est né près de Berne en Suisse, il vit et travaille à Bordeaux et dans le Sud-Gironde. Photographe de talent, dégustateur reconnu, chroniqueur, auteur d'une douzaine de livres sur le vin et d'innombrables articles sur le sujet depuis trente ans, il fait partie des icônes du journalisme viti-vinicole en Europe. Pour ce pianiste de formation, compositeur, féru de nouvelles technologies, mais aussi jardinier à ses heures et fin gourmet, le vin n'est pas une fin en soi, mais fait partie intégrante de notre culture.

Vineyard management pratices to increase vine longevity

Created in 1985, our organisation Worldwide Vineyards specializes in bud-grafting techniques (T-bud and Chip-bud) and has been delivering grafting and top-grafting services for over 30 years in many wine-growing countries. For every vineyard worldwide, we offer an immediate conversion solution. Top-grafting is the best way to quickly change a cultivar no longer adapted. Very old vines may also be grafted successfully while preserving their high-quality production thanks to their well-developed root system. Grafting onto rootstocks directly in the field is the current way to improve plant structure and vineyard durability (better healing and bonding processes). As for research, we’ve been experimenting for over 10 years on the quality of different grafting techniques, and on any factor that could weaken or decline the vines prematurely.
